Considered one of the earliest ancestors of modern elephants, Moeritherium did not look much like them in appearance. Its body was stocky and low, with short, strong legs, adapted to a semi aquatic lifestyle similar to that of modern hippopotamuses. Its size was relatively small compared to modern
